Rainbow at the end of the Powder Highway
Fernie Mountain is an absolute gem. It has acres and acres of skiing for every level of skier, from the gentle, cruising green runs to the up-to-your-backside-in-powder bowls that litter the place and no end of great tree runs. Whichever way you look, the scenery is stunning and there's so much space there's no overcrowding and a quick turn here or a little traverse there can lead to you having a whole powder field to yourself. Sadly, we only skied for two days here and it was early season, so while the snow was good, we weren't as spoilt as we would have been had we gone in January instead - gives me a great excuse to go back next year.
Fernie village is only 5 minutes drive away from the mountain. If you don't have transport there is a hitching spot just on the edge of town that sees skiers and boarders queuing to thumb a lift every morning. Fernie has plenty of colourful characters and an excellent selection of bars should you want to continue late on with your apres ski. If you're there in December watch out for the Mogul Smoker which is basically a very late night rave/party/drinking session run every year in a field where pretty much the whole village turns up to encourage the snow gods to bring forth a huge dump for the coming season.
If you're going try anywhere in Canada that isn't Whistler, definitely go here. You won't be disappointed.
