Flaine is a great resort for all abilities and level of skier including the absolute beginner, it is a good choice for families in particular as its a ski-in ski-out resort. Flaine is one of the closest resorts to Geneva airport, making it an excellent choice for a long weekend break. The views over the terrain are amazing and the snow is consistant through-out the season.
Opening in 1968 the modern architectural designs was the mastermind creations of Eric Boisonnes and Marcel Breuer. The purpose built resort of Flaine is a great place for a holiday. If you like convenience and enjoy wide-open spaces with plenty of cruiser skiing and snowboarding then you will like Flaine. The resort's original modern-style heart has been extended, and of late approx 70 chalet style properties have been built higher up in the Hameau de Flaine area (1800m). this is 2km away from the main ski areas.
Flaine la Foret (1700m) consists of many apartment buildings, shops, ski hire facilites a small arcade with bars, restaurants, pizza takeaway and bowling alley, as well as links onto the Grand Massif ski area and nursey slope. Flaine Forum is the lower tier of the three (1600m) taking centre stage and home to the oversize sculpture designed by Picasso, withing the Forum area you can expect to find an outdoor ice rink, many restaurants, shops and après activities. You can connect to the Forum from Foret by the funicular lift facility in the centre of the resort, or take a sledge and go down the adventurous way! This is a very casual resort as most of the accommodations are self catering, but should you decide to eat out then pre booking is well advised to avoid any disappointment.
When on the piste whether it be the green, blue, red or black you can stop and take a relaxing break at one of the great restaurants and still take in all the terrain that surrounds you. Even if you are not a confident skier it is highly reccommended that you take the large cable car Grande platières cable car (DMC) at (2500m) up to the top of the mountain and enjoy a lunchtime snack at Le Désert Blanc whilst taking in the vast area of Flaine's Grand Massif, Its a self service buffet style eaterie that provides light snacks to larger hot meals. Its views are spectacular and a must see experience. Even the cable car back is relaxing as this is about 20minutes in journey time and you can see all the skiing activity down below.
