Arriving in Steamboat after a drive up from Aspen in the evening we soon realised that Steamboat wasn't exactly how you expect it. I was firstly shocked at how big an area the town and resort covers.
The mountain is big and will keep you entertained for a while.
We stayed very close to the mountain at the West Condos which are just a short walk across the street to the slopes and so you can roll out of bed and be on the slopes within 5 minutes.... no shuttles or queues to contend with!
On the other hand if you are staying at one of the properties further away, we found the shuttle service to be prompt and frequent, and runs late into the evening to allow you to have plenty of drinks in town before returning for some much needed rest, before hitting the slopes to experience the fresh champagne powder from the previous evening's new snowfall.
The town itself is based around a single mainstreet and has a fantastic Western/Cowboy feeling. We found the people we met to be very friendly and everyone made you welcome.
Steamboat is not as 'polished' as other resorts and that's what makes it unique, it's a working town with 'real people' and I would definately want to return again to cover more of the mountain.
