Great Family Skiiing in Canada
This was out first trip to Tremblant although we have previously been to Whistler. The resort is run by Intrawest and is only about 90 minutes or so drive from Montreal airport which makes it very accessible for British visitors. The flight back to the UK was just 5 hours 40 minutes! We stayed at the Fairmont which has good facilities, restaurant, pools and service although our room wasn't the best. You need a village view room above 3rd floor really. The hotel is however right on the slopes and is ski-in ski-out. The mountain itself is only 875 metres high but you still get to ski down about 2000 feet so it comparable to resorts at higher altitude. The main gondola was busy in the morning as the resort seems to be a roaring success but I understand that a new gondola opens for the 2008 season. There's about 90 pistes and we understand that the snow year was the best they had had for many a season. We're novices but people we spoke to were raving about the snow conditions so I guess we were spoilt! Most of the challenging stuff is on the North side of the mountain which is best skied in the morning when the sun is on it. Our hired kit was good and the service was friendly throughout the resort. There's a good choice of restaurants and bars but don't forget to book if the resort is busy. We took some lessons with the snow school and this was well run with small groups as there are so many instructors. The resort is in the middle of the Laurentian Mountains so the view from the summit is gorgeous on a clear day. There's lots of other activities (don't miss out on the dog-sledding if you haven't done it before) but watch out for the Canadian temperature drops - went down to minus 31 with the wind chill on one day when we were there and then back up to 3 degrees three days later!! The Canadians are big on family and this is a great family resort which Brits should consider if they want a change from Europe but don't fancy the long haul to Whistler or Colorado. Seemed a bit on the pricey side I think - but probably typical - and short of 'cool' bars if you want those. Enjoy!
